Cryonics has spent decades in the gap between science fiction and science, and the fiction got there first.
What survives in most people's heads is a set of beliefs with very little connection to the actual procedure.
Some make it sound magical. Others make it sound fraudulent. Knowing what cryonics does not claim turns out to matter as much as knowing what it does.

What the procedure actually is
"Walt Disney was frozen"
He was not. This is the most repeated claim about cryonics and it has never been true.
Disney died on 15 December 1966 and his remains were cremated two days later, with his ashes interred at Forest Lawn in Glendale.
The first person actually cryopreserved was Dr James Bedford, in January 1967, a month after Disney's death.
The legend is worth naming because it shaped everything that followed. It made cryonics sound like a rich man's vanity rather than a medical procedure.
"Cryonics means freezing a body in ice"
The picture is a person stored like a frozen dinner, waiting to be thawed. The real procedure works hard to avoid ice entirely.
Much of the water in the tissue is replaced with cryoprotective solutions, which is the step that makes the difference.
The body is then cooled into a glass-like state, a process called vitrification. The aim is to stop decay without the crystal damage freezing causes.
It is the opposite of a deep freeze rather than an example of one. Ice is the thing the whole procedure is built to prevent.
"Cryonics tries to bring back the dead"
It does not claim to resurrect anyone. It intervenes at one specific threshold.
That threshold is the point where today's medicine can no longer keep someone alive, while the information in the brain is still physically present.
The field treats death as a process rather than a single instant, and tries to preserve structure before that process erases it.
A preserved person is framed as a patient in critical condition awaiting a treatment that does not exist, not as a corpse awaiting a miracle.
What is claimed, and what is not
"People have already been revived"
No human has ever been revived from cryopreservation. We say that without hedging, and we say it in its own article.
Vitrification is genuinely reversible at small scale. Human embryos and eggs are routinely vitrified, stored, warmed, and go on to develop normally.
The unsolved problem is size. Loading cryoprotectant evenly through a whole brain is a different order of difficulty from doing it to a few cells.
Getting heat back in without damage is harder still, and nobody has done it at human scale.
Anyone who tells you a person has been revived is mistaken or lying. There is no ambiguity here to exploit.
"It is a scam or pseudoscience"
This one deserves a real answer rather than an offended one, because plenty of things in this shape are scams.
A scam depends on deception. Pseudoscience depends on denying reality or dodging falsification.
The test is what the seller does with the uncertainty. Hiding it is the tell.
Cryonics done honestly promises no date, no probability, and no outcome. It offers preservation and states the odds are unknown.
That is why informed consent carries so much weight here, and why the accusation gets its own article instead of a dismissal.
A clearly labelled bet is a different object from a con. You are allowed to decline it and still see the difference.
"You would wake up one day exactly the same"
Preservation is not a pause button on a film that resumes mid-scene.
Any revival would involve real medical repair, and a serious adjustment to a world that had moved on without you.
What preservation aims at is the structure that encodes you. It does not preserve your era, your circumstances, or the people you knew.
Identity might carry forward. The context certainly will not, and arriving alone is a real thing to weigh rather than a detail.
What it asks of you
"It is only for the rich or the eccentric"
The headline figure is large, so cryonics gets filed under billionaire hobby.
Almost nobody pays it as a lump sum. Most members fund it through life insurance in modest monthly payments.
What marks a member is not wealth. It is a willingness to act on the possibility that future medicine solves what current medicine cannot.

"Once preserved, the future takes care of everything"
Preservation is the first step, not the finish line.
Holding cryogenic conditions stable for decades takes durable organizations, reliable funding, and continuous oversight.
The money is deliberately separated from the operating business. Long-term storage fees go to a separate Swiss foundation that invests them, so upkeep comes from returns rather than new sales.
That structure is the answer to the obvious question about what happens if the company fails, and it is designed rather than hoped for.
Revival also depends on choices nobody has made yet. Treating this as a tidy escape hatch ignores the institutional commitment it actually requires.
Clear the myths away and what remains is something you can evaluate on its merits, which is all we have ever asked for.
